Marriage By the Numbers

Today Captain Y and I have been married 9 years, which seems impossible but alas, the calendar says it’s true.  In the spirit of celebration we give you marriage by the numbers.  

In the last 9 years we have:

Acquired 1 lovely Sasha dog

Lived in 2 states

Rocked out at 3 U2 concerts

Been “Captain” Y for 4 years  

Seen 5 Broadway musicals (Wicked, Spam-a-lot, Mary Poppins, Young Frankenstein, and Shrek)

Had 6 vehicles (1 Chevy, 1 Mazda, 4 Toyotas)

Spent 7 years in a house of our own

Traveled across 8 time zones together in one day (Hello, Germany!)

Had 9 different jobs between two of us

A few other numbers (or approximations) of note:

• Brought home Gaston the 12 point buck who lives on our wall 
• Caught more fish than I care to count
• Made too many new friends to enumerate
• Baked approximately 1 million batches of cookies (mostly chocolate chip). I’m thinking of keeping a tally for 2012 because seriously, you would not believe how many of these cookies we go though in a year!
• Made a trillion plus memories together!

So long 2011

Welcome 2012, we are excited to see what you have in store for us.  We look forward to a year filled exciting challenges, friends, family and new adventures! 

Girl Hunter (The Book)

I was looking around online last week and came across a book the piqued my interest: Girl Hunter by Georgia Pellegrini.

It first caught my eye because it is filled with recipes for cooking wild game and let’s be honest, every time Captain Y goes hunting he comes home with something new so I need all the ideas I can get.  Some of the recipes are available on her website:

Yeah, I could eat any of those for dinner and be happy.  

I looked up the book on Amazon.com, I love to read the reviews as well as check out some of the pages they allow you to preview.  After reading the prologue I was hooked and can’t wait to get my hands on this book!  I actually just ordered a copy using a gift card I’ve been hoarding.  I can’t remember the last time I bought a new book (I’m all about the used bookstore) not to mention a hard back edition, so you know I wanted this one.

The author, Georgia, worked on Wall Street, but left the daily grind to attend culinary school.  After school she worked in several restaurants using delicious local ingredients, one thing led to another and she figured out the best way to get local meat was to kill it yourself.  So she made friends with hunters all around the country and started learning from the best and cooking up her trophies.  Her book is the story of her hunting trips and the characters she met along the way as well as a cookbook filled with ways to cook up some delicious wild game.  

Captain Y is excited because he asked me to go turkey hunting with him this spring.  Last year I tagged along on a hunt when he got a very nice Tom, but this year he wants me to shoot too.  I promised to take a hunters safety class (and found a friend to go with me) which is the first step in getting a hunting license.  My Dad taught me gun safety and how to shoot when I was younger and I’m a pretty good shot – better than Captain Y on most days.  I have not decided if I’m actually going to hunt but I’m taking steps in that direction so I can decide when the time comes.
